Abstract

The topic of this study is the Socio-Economic Impact of the Failed and Abandoned Brass LNG Construction Project on Brass Island and the Host Communities. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors that were responsible for the failure and abandonment of the Brass LNG Project and the socio-economic impact of the failure and abandonment of the project on the host communities. The study employed the quantitative research method, using a structured questionnaire as a data collection instrument. A population of 57 staff (both Junior and Senior) spread across the Brass LNG Project Team, NNPC in Brass Island and Abuja. A sample size of 50 was arrived at using Yamane’s mode of sampling size technique. 50 questionnaires were administered, of which 50 were retrieved, translating to a 100% response rate. The data collected was analyzed using the t-test and chi-square statistical tools. Hypotheses I and II were tested, and Decisions were taken. The Study Objectives were achieved. The findings of the study reveal the causes that led to the failure and abandonment of the Brass LNG Project. The study also reveals there were significant socio-economic impacts on the host community as a result of the failure and abandonment of the Brass LNG project. Based on the study findings, the researcher gave some useful and practical recommendations to mitigate future Abandonment of Oil and Gas Projects in Nigeria. The outcome of the study has practical benefits to Project Managers, Project Engineers, Oil and Gas Stakeholders, the Academic Society, Industrial Professionals, Policy Makers, and Organizations saddled with the responsibility of Oil and Gas development in Nigeria.
