Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has become an important concept in the field of
research and innovation, particularly in the European Union. The concept has evolved in recent years,
leading to extensive literature on its various dimensions, including public engagement, sustainability, ethics,
and governance. In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review and scientometric analysis to
identify the main concepts and themes related to RRI. Our findings reveal that RRI has gained significant
attention since 2011, with "responsible research and innovation” and "responsible innovation" being the
most frequent terms used in the literature. We also identified 33 concepts in eight different themes, including
engagement, gender equality, science education, ethics, open access, and governance. The study highlights
the need to break down the black box of RRI and reduce its complexity to shed light on the emerging
concepts in the field of responsible innovation and responsible research. The research process can benefit
from these insights to promote innovation that is aligned with societal values and contributes to a sustainable
future.
