FRIENDSHIP FUNCTIONS AND COMMUNICATION STYLES AMONG BROKEN HOME CHILDREN IN YOGYAKARTA

This case study examines the impact of divorce on the interpersonal communication styles of
children from broken homes in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Using qualitative methods, in-depth interviews were
conducted with informants who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Three communication
styles were identified among broken home children and their friends: dominant, relaxed, and caring. The
study also explored the factors influencing these communication styles, such as birth order and religiosity.
The high divorce rate in Yogyakarta was cited as a contributing factor to the prevalence of broken homes in
the area. The importance of positive communication styles was highlighted, emphasizing the role of parents
and families in developing healthy communication patterns. The study contributes to understanding the
impact of divorce on children's communication styles in broken homes and highlights the role of friendship
and interpersonal communication in the lives of these children.
