This paper discusses the challenges posed by urbanization and development in India, particularly
in the context of poverty reduction. As India's urban population is set to double by 2031, the already weak
urban services in the country's cities will be further strained. Basic services, infrastructure, governance, rural
flight, and poverty reduction are identified as important issues. The majority of India's urban population
resides in the bottom income segment, making it critical to adopt a time-bound and systematic manner to
alleviate urban poverty. The paper proposes several solutions, such as forming self-help groups that can avail
microfinance, providing night shelters, and earmarking a specific percentage of land in housing plans for the
urban poor. The document also discusses poverty measurement and the evolving methodology for identifying
urban poverty. Additionally, the document suggests the need for continued efforts to combat poverty.
