Abstract

The rise of digital technology has led to an increase in the number of academic journals, which has
resulted in cut-throat competition among them. This competition has led to the emergence of predatory or fake
journals that publish low-quality research studies for a fee. However, this phenomenon is not limited to lowranked journals, as even high-ranked journals also publish research studies that do not conform to common
research standards and contain linguistic errors. This study aims to assess the quality of abstracts of articles
published in online academic journals. Through observation, the researcher found that the research elements
that should be present in the abstracts were either missing or stated vaguely, and the language of the abstracts
was poor. The findings suggest that journals do not prioritize editorial work to improve the quality of articles
they accept for publication, likely due to financial incentives. The researcher recommends that more largescale research should be conducted to pressure journals to raise their academic standards. This study highlights
the need for increased awareness and caution in publishing research studies in online academic journals.
